Is The Labiaplasty An Unhealthy Procedure

There is a current, escalating trend, encouraging women to surgically alter the aesthetics of their labia minora and majora….I have viewed the before and after photographs posted by plastic surgeons. What I found surprising was that most of the labia exhibited on the websites in the ‘before’ pictures looked like textbook examples of female genitalia. As if there is something wrong with a vagina if it looks like a vagina, and not like a Barbie doll’s nonexistent one. Just as men have appendages of various sizes and shapes jutting out from their pelvic regions, so women have vaginal lips in various shapes and sizes. As a reason for surgical intervention, some women are complaining they feel their labia does not fall within the normal range, but how could they honestly know this? “The size, colour, and shape of labia vary significantly, and may change as a result of childbirth, aging and other events.” Why the desire to make them smaller…do men ever want to diminish their penises. In fact, which living creature wishes to diminish the breadth of their genitalia? Thats akin to reducing the size of your skull, or getting rid of one of your kidneys because you think you weigh too much. This procedure is not like plucking eyebrow hairs… a knife, and the physical pain of recovering after surgery is involved. Photographs of average vulvas are most likely being displayed purposefully on the websites to encourage self-consciousness in women where none should exist, in order to increase business. Vaginas are like beautiful flowers of different species. Do we really want to see the same type of flora everywhere?
